I’m often asked if self-awareness is a good thing. I would say that awareness is a good thing, and it can be a great asset, but not at the cost of self-awareness.
People with self-awareness are able to actually control their habits, routines, impulses, and reactions, as opposed to being in a position where they can’t control their habits, routines, impulses, and reactions. This is why people with this skill are often called “self-aware,” because they don’t just have a good, clear idea of who they are, but also can recognize their own emotions and feelings.

This is because self-awareness is something that most people naturally don’t want to admit to themselves.
It’s also something that is very hard to “get right.” It’s something that most people are reluctant to admit to themselves. Even when it’s clearly something that they are struggling with, they will often avoid it by saying, “No, I cant really give myself the time to really think about it.” But they never admit that they have a problem, and they will not admit their own struggle with self-awareness.
It seems as though most of us are only aware of ourselves when we are in the throes of a full blown identity crisis and struggle to figure out how we got there. And because so many of us are unaware of our own identity, we often try to mask it, and this is one of the most common ways that we do this.
The problem with trying to mask ourselves from being aware of our identities is that we feel much more vulnerable when we do this. The truth is that you are going to be aware of your identity at any time, and the way you handle this is going to be based on how you feel. If you feel like you are drowning, you can choose to swim or dive. The same applies to any major life decision you make.
The fact is that the majority of our thoughts and actions are on autopilot. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing either. Our habits, routines, impulses, and reactions carry us through our lives so we don’t have to stop and think about it every time we wipe our ass or start a car.
The problem is when we spend so much of our time on autopilot that we forget we’re on autopilot. Because when were not even aware of our own habits, routines, impulses, and reactions, then we no longer control them they control us. Whereas a person with self-awareness is able to exercise a little meta-cognition and say, “Hmm… every time my sister calls me and asks for money, I end up drinking a lot of vodkas.
