I once read a post on the Forbes website with the title, “How to market like a small business.” The post was about marketing and business strategy and was titled “The Three Levels of Self-Awareness.
I thought that was pretty interesting. Although I’ve never been marketing for a small business, I think I may be able to relate to the author when it comes to the three levels of self-awareness.
I think the three levels of self-awareness are like the three stages in the life of a human who can choose and then choose to continue. Like a human, we can either be in a state of extreme anxiety (the three stage of the human, stage 1) or be in a state of extreme calm (stage 2).
I think the difference is that stage 2 is the stage of extreme calm. I think it’s that stage that makes us want to do things and live our lives more. Even if you are in stage 3, you still want to do things, even if it’s just to go to the store and eat ice cream. I think the biggest difference between the two is that stage 3 is the stage of extreme anxiety.
When we are at stage 2 we are in a state of extreme calm. We don’t really want to do anything. And stage 3 is the stage of extreme anxiety. We really want to do things, so we do them.
Actually, I think stage 3 is the stage of extreme panic, because we want to do things, but we are unsure if we are going to like it or not. Like it could be good, but we should really think about whether it might be too scary, too dangerous to be doing it, or maybe we shouldnt try it if we are scared.
What I’ve found is that it’s a good idea to be constantly monitoring your own state of awareness. There are a lot of people out there who don’t know when they’ve reached stage 3, and even those who do know, it’s hard to know how to react to it and still continue with your day. Once they’re in stage 3 they’re more aware of everything and can’t be so easily distracted.
So you might not know when you start experiencing stage 3, but you know it when you see it. And when you see it you can say, “oh, I’ve reached stage 3, I’m freaking out.” And then you can take action.
One of the things we hear from our customers is that they dont want to be distracted. They want to be in control of their lives, but they also want to be able to do what they want. And we think this is because stage 3 is a lot harder to get to. One of the most common questions we get is, “Ive hit stage three, but I cant remember what I wanted to do…”.
That is the thing about marketing. The first time you do a marketing campaign, you will likely be the target of a lot of “what ifs”. You’re going to face the same questions again and again. And the same set of questions, but you’re going to find yourself not knowing what you really want to do. Because stage 3 is a lot harder to get to.
