What does it mean for a car to be “properly located”?

Well, pretty much exactly what it sounds like. A properly located car is parked in a place that doesn’t bother other people or break the rules of the city. For example, If your parked car is on the sidewalk, then you’re probably violating some sort of bylaw. This is not a proper location . The same goes for double parking.

If your car blocks somebody’s driveway then you’re also doing something wrong. If somebody parks in front of your driveway then you’re not going to be too happy about that either. If your car is parked on a crosswalk then you’re going to get a ticket. Even if you’re waiting for a street to turn, you shouldn’t park on the main road anyway.

So basically, it’s all about trying to find the right spot in the right place at the right time.

The location of your car is important. Parking in front of a fire hydrant or blocking a driveway is not going to do you any favors. The law applies to ALL street parking…you’d better remember that.

Now, let’s take a look at some specific areas and see what we can learn about properly located cars:

Where should you park?

The general rule is to park where it doesn’t bother anybody. Here are some situations where you should be extra vigilant:

A parking spot on the sidewalk – If your car is parked on the sidewalk, then you need to move it right away . This is an absolute no-no and will get you a ticket no matter how small the offense may be. If there’s a sidewalk somewhere near your house, then don’t park on it… You can’t do it!

No parking or stopping on a sidewalk – The same goes for put there. If you’ve been stopped at a stop sign , then you can park as close as possible to the stop sign. If you’ve been stopped at a red light , then you don’t have to go further than the stop line and back of the crosswalk . Same goes for parking next to a fire hydrant.

You should already know that you can’t park within 15 feet of a fire hydrant because that’s the “safety zone”.

The area around the hydrant is off-limits. If you’re not parked in this area, then it doesn’t matter if your car is parked next to the hydrant or not. And last but not least, never park within 30 feet of a fire station . This rule is pretty much self-explanatory.

Many vehicles have their license plate located in the center of the front bumper, which adds to aerodynamic drag. Some other vehicles have mounted it on the rear bumper, often attached by hinges so that it can be flipped up when not in use for easier access to the trunk or other areas of the car.

Even with license plates being directly in front of the driver during all times while driving, they are sometimes confusing and difficult to read due to sun glare or poor reflection off of their surface.

By the early 1990s, states were offering discounts to owners of older vehicles in order to encourage registration and replace older plates. Many older cars also have a sticker on them identifying the owner as having purchased the vehicle when it was new.

In order to receive a reduced rate from stickers or from being able to apply for a license plate without a security deposit, it is necessary that the car in question has an OE aftermarket plate.

This is because some states require that plates have a security deposit in order to apply for one without going through their renewal process.
