Let’s get started by learning what positioning actually means.

For starters, positioning is not something that comes naturally; it has lots of rules and guidelines which must be followed in order for it to work effectively.

I’ll be listing some of these guidelines at the bottom of this article, so keep reading to learn more. When you position yourself correctly, your business can stand out well amongst your competitors.

Positioning Your Business

1.What exactly does positioning mean?

Positioning is basically about giving your business an identity. It is the process where you determine who your ideal customer is and what they are looking for in a product or service. The reason why it’s called positioning is because every business has its own corner within the market that it operates within.

This corner can be visualized as a position on a chart which plots all goods or services against one another on two axes- price vs quality and price.

Imagine your business as a dot on the chart and you want to get it to the position where you want it. If you don’t know where that is, then your business will end up somewhere in the middle of nowhere and will be unable to attract lots of new customers.

2.What is positioning all about?

Positioning is simply about making your business stand out from its competitors and in order to do this, you need a plan in place for how exactly you’re going to do it.

There are four main points which must be looked at in order to determine how your business should be positioned: The customer experience, the functional benefit, differentiation and emotional benefit.

The customer experience is about how your customers perceive your business. It’s about how your customers feel when they interact with you and it includes the way that you interact with them.

What do they feel when they talk to you? Do they feel happy, excited, interested or interested? This part is all about how you can turn a simple conversation into an experience that will have a great impact on the customer.

3.Functional benefit

Functional benefit is all about what you do for your customers. It’s the part of your business that turns a conversation into a sale. This means that one of the most important things for your customers to consider when you’re positioning your business is the functional benefit- this is what will make them think ‘yes’ when they walk away from the purchase process.

Differentiation is about how you stand apart from your competitors. It’s that thing that makes you different, but it’s all about the things that make you unique as a way to stand out from the rest of the crowd.

5.Emotional benefit

This is all about how your customers feel. This is a very important part of positioning your business because it’s all about emotional triggers, which happens when customers have a good experience with your product or service and therefore think ‘yes’ for purchasing it.

You want to position your business so that customers feel good when they interact with you and this will happen by creating an emotional benefit for them to consider when making their purchase decision.

There are lots of ways that you can position your business, but one of the most important things is to create a good customer experience. However, if you are just starting up, then you’re probably not going to have lots of money to invest in rebranding your company or creating new adverts, so there are some other methods that can be used instead.

6.What are some examples of businesses which have positioned themselves well?

The first example of a business which has positioned itself well is Apple. Here’s why this company has positioned itself extremely well: it created an emotional benefit that encouraged people to buy its product by talking about what it does rather than how it works.

When Steve Jobs unveiled the first iPhone, he revealed the features of the device, but he did something very different- he didn’t tell us how it works, instead he said ‘it just works’. This had a huge impact on me because I had never seen a phone that was so easy to use. It’s all about the emotional benefit that they have created for their customers.

Also, Apple doesn’t just focus on functional benefits because they are able to create products with amazing functional benefits which are better than their competitors. They aren’t cheap or of low quality either, so this has also encouraged people to buy their products.
