Ten Different Film Marketing Ideas For A Small Budget Movies

Film Marketing – or the process of marketing a film – is a costly and complicated process. For many filmmakers on a small budget, it can be an impossible feat. There are, however, some film marketing ideas that you can implement to help get your movie seen by more people.

Ten Film Marketing Ideas are as follows:

1) Create A Press Kit:

A press kit is one of the most cost-effective ways to let people know about your film without breaking the bank. All you need is 3 things: A title sheet with information about how to contact your production company and what the movie is about; one or two still images from your production; and a full description of your production company including any other films that you’ve made in the past.

2) Make a press release:

If you’re making a film that deals with the topic of your film, approach any news outlets in your city and see if they would be willing to write an article about it. If you’re not sure how to write a press release, you can find several free samples on the web or simply copy and modify one.

3) Use social networking sites:

Chances are, if you’re a filmmaker on a budget, you’ve already figured out that social networking sites can help spread the word about your movie. For example, if you post your movie’s trailer on Facebook, you may end up getting a lot of views from people who haven’t even seen your film yet.

What’s more, you can use social networking sites such as Twitter and Tumblr to try to promote your film for free. However, be sure to make these sites part of the marketing campaign for your film by having a well-written profile on them.

4) Make sure you have a viable website:

People like to have a reason to visit your profile page when they’re browsing through social networking websites. Therefore, it’s important to have a website where they can see more information about your film. You can even take this a step further by promoting your film across the internet on sites like YouTube and Imdb; however, be sure to post links on your website to keep people from getting lost.

5) Give out DVD’s:

DVD’s are still the most common way for people to view movies at home. Therefore, you should constantly have DVD’s of your movie lying around town in places like coffee shops and bookstores. These will always be relevant as long as you keep them in good condition.

6) Bring your movie to film festivals:

This is another way to get people to watch your movie, especially if you’re on a budget. However, be sure to apply for festival entry fees in advance so that you can afford the costs. Many festivals will let you submit for free if you’ve submitted before, so don’t hesitate to look into this option too.

7) Ask people:

Another excellent way of marketing your film is asking people if they would like to see it. This is a good tactic because the most common response is that they want to see it but they can’t afford it at the moment. Therefore, if you’re on a budget, you should make your film affordable by using the money you have left over after making the movie.

8) Sell it:

If you can sell the rights to your movie to someone else, this will help people see it without having to pay anything. However, this is not an idea for every film; therefore, before selling your movie, be sure to set realistic prices that won’t break the bank.

9) Make it into a trailer:

As mentioned above in #1, a trailer can be just as effective as any other form of marketing in getting people to pay attention to your film because they immediately know what they’re going to find when they watch. You can use a trailer to promote your film on the internet, too.

10) Ask for donations:

If you’re not in a position where you need to sell your movie at all costs, then you should consider asking for donations so that people can pay what they want for it. While this can be an effective way of getting people to see your movie, it’s unlikely that you’ll make very much money from this method. Nevertheless, it will still help people get to see your film while providing additional funding for making the next one.
